Everyone loves to celebrate their birthday. You know that your birthday is coming, and that someone who
loves you has a present for you. You are not sure exactly what the present is (although you’ve been told
you will really like it), and you don’t know exactly when you will receive it. You know it is something good,
and that it is coming soon.

The event we are looking at today compares to a birthday. However the difference is that with a birthday
you know the date but not the gift with this event we know the gift but people didn’t know the date.
We have been looking at the Lightning and thunder events of God in history. The lightning being the
coming of Jesus and thunder we look at today.

Today the real action of the book of Acts begins with an event called Pentecost.

Today we are launching into the book of Acts. It is a significant and so important book. It is significant firstly because of the major themes of the Bible in contains. Themes like:- a major step in the unfolding plan of God revelation; the coming of the promised Holy Spirit; the work of Jesus after his return to the Father; the beginning of the church – and it’s practises; the preaching of the word of God as God main way of saving people.

The title Luke gave to his 2 volume work is ‘The things fulfilled in our midst’ Luke 1:1

(Amos 3:7 ‘God does nothing but first He reveals His secrets to His servants the prophets)

Reason for writing two volumes Luke 1:4 ‘seemed good to me also…so that you may have certainty concerning the narratives about which you have been misinformed [or inadequately informed]’ cf. the use of the same verb Acts 18:25, 21:21, 24.

The author was a participant in some of the events in Acts. The narrative changes there is third person plural ‘we’ in 16.10-17, 20.5-15, 21.1-18, 27.1-28.16. The author who is writing in Rome 28:14 ‘and so we came to Rome’

The sources: the author  had official legal proceeding of Paul trials in Caesarea Maritima inActs 23.26-26.32. He even copies an official letter from the tribune, Claudius Lysias, to governor Felix, 23.25-30. See also Luke 1:1-4

Even before I came to Lakeshore I have been daydreaming about what God might do on the Sunshine Coast through His church we call Lakeshore. Dreaming about how God would build on what he has been doing for many years before. The church is central to God’s plan. His people.

When Jesus left the earth what was his plan to continue his work on earth? At the end of the Gospels and the beginning of Acts Jesus take us into a stadium for the launch of this plan for the universe. The ground is in darkness. The big lights come on and what is before us? His 11 disciples. Men who were denying Jesus what would seem like only moments before. But this God plan for the world. So now we as the church of Jesus are the plan of God to make Jesus known.
